Laboratory for Microbiology is divided into the virology and bacteriology section.
The first part (room) of the virology section is used to maintain and subcultivate cell cultures, later on used for isolation of viruses.
The second part (room) within virology section is used for isolation of viruses on cell cultures and embryonated chicken eggs, where their identification is done with fluorescence antibody technique, serum neutralization test, inhibition of hemagglutination and other virological methods. Here is performed the diagnostics of major viral diseases, such as: avian influenza, bovine viral diarrhea, classical swine fever and diagnostics of diseases caused by bacteria that can’t be cultured on artificial nutrient agar such as chlamydiosis (enzootic abortion in sheep).
The bacteriology section is divided in 3 separated parts. In the first one, the routine isolation and identification of bacteria and fungi, which do not require special conditions for protection of laboratory personnel, is performed. In the other 2 parts, which are physically separated from the first one, isolation and identification of the pathogens which require biosecurity level 2 and 3 is performed. In this part, the most important/common bacterial diseases are diagnosed, such as brucellosis, tuberculosis, enterotoxaemia, salmonellosis, colibacillosis etc., with isolation on nutrient agars and identification with microscopic, biochemical and serological methods. Beside isolation/identification, where necessary, the antimicrobial susceptibility testing is performed
