University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna
The University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna is the only academic educational and research institution in Austria that focuses on the veterinary sciences, and at the same time the oldest such institution in the German-speaking world (founded 1765 by the Empress Maria Theresia). Our mission: Responsible teaching, visionary research and ambitious healing. About 1,300 employees and 2,300 students work on the campus in the north of Vienna, which also houses the animal hospital and various spin-off-companies.
Messerli - Research Institute
The Messerli Research Institute was founded in 2010 with support from the Messerli Foundation (Sörenberg, Switzerland) under the management of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna in cooperation with the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna. The research is devoted to the interaction between humans and animals, as well as its theoretical principles in animal cognition and behavior, comparative medicine and ethics.
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Skopje
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – Skopje has teaching, research and applicative activity in field of veterinary medicine and veterinary public health. Mission of FVM-S is realized via organizing study, transfer of knowledge, development and promotion of the education and science in veterinary health in RM, development of creative abilities, preparing students for profession of doctor of veterinary medicine which needs professional knowledge and ability for scientific approach in the work, promoting of the technological development of the veterinary profession and building positions for the future.

Our story
The aim of this summer school is to contribute to the teaching on animal welfare, veterinary ethics and law with a focus on small-scale farms and traditional (extensive) production systems that are of particular importance in the Balkan states and Eastern Europe. As an interdisciplinary scheme, the summer shool aims to contribute to the VetNEST members’ curricula as an elective course and allow veterinary students to gain knowledge on the topic within a total of 75 working hours investment (3 ECTS credits; 1 ECTS credit = 25 working hours). First training school will be held and organised in Vienna and followed by other VetNEST member country in future.
VetNEST member institution shall integrate theoretical and practical teaching goals and integrated in their curicula in form of elective subject. In order to reach the teaching goals, not only theoretical aspects will be presented in lectures and dealt with in workshops. In the course special attention will be given to the roles, responsibilities and activities of veterinary professionals in implementation of animal welfare measures, especially in the development of a communication strategy. Furthermore, first hand experience will be acquired through farm visits to learn about a variety of situations in different management conditions, especially about small scale farms, traditional production, extensive type of breeding (nomad breeding) etc.
