Department of Biochemistry and cell biology

1. Subject definition: Biochemistry

Biochemistry as a science introduce the students with the basic laws of chemistry and physics, implemented in all systems of a living cell, e.g. Introduction to the chemical processes in the living organsms.

2.Subjects in the veterinary education:

basic, preclinical.

3.Aims of the subject:

The main aim of the subject is to introduce the students with the structure and function of all biological macromolecules as base building components of all living cells, through biochemical explanation of all physiological processes. The lessons include metabolic regulation and interaction.

During the practical laboratory work, the students get to know with the basic experiences in experimental work with biological matrix, with a special note on the safety when sampling and protection of the analyst. Students are introduced with the basic analytical biochemical methods important in veterinary medicine such as: electrophoresis, different chromatographic techniques, spectrometry, ELISA, PCR).

4.Teaching:

Second semester, total number: 120 hours, 60 for theory and 60 for practice.

5.Subject methodology

Theory: interactive PowerPoint presentations with discussions.

Practice:in the Laboratory for chemistry, biochemistry and physiology. Students are organized in small groups.

Student work: preparation a written paper on a certain topic from the subject and it’s presentation.

Cell Biology
1.Subject definition: Cell Biology

Biology is a science where students get knowledge for the cell structure and function.

2.Subjects in the veterinary education:

basic, preclinical.

3.Aims of the subject

The main aim of the subject is to introduce the students with the basic structural and functional part of all living organisms – the cell. Students learn about subcellular structures, their composition and function, as well as their interconnection in the functioning of the cell. As an introduction to genetics the chromosome structure is thought as well.

During the practical laboratory work, the students get to know with the principles of microscoping.

4.Teaching

First semester, total number: 60 hours, 30 for theory and 30 for practice.

5.Subject methodology

Theory: interactive PowerPoint presentations with discussions.

Practice:in the Laboratory for chemistry, biochemistry and physiology . Students are organized in small groups.

Student work: preparation a written paper on a certain topic from the subject and it’s presentation
